To Really Learn, Quit Studying and Take a Test...

... is the title of an article in the New York Times from last thursday.

What a pity. We teachers struggle all the time with new teaching methods and it is so easy:
Just give the students a lot of tests

This might be ok if you think that learning just means that you know the facts afterwards but I wonder if it really helps to understand the material and to make your own conclusions?
The tested persons knew more after one week, but how much do they remember later?

I think it is important to have a variation in your teaching to reach different learning aims.
